If your bag is too big at the gate
A bag that does not fit the sizing device or exceeds the allowance is treated as a checked bag. You pay the checked bag fee plus a service fee.
Service fee of CAD $25 per bag on flights within Canada, on top of the checked bag fee (WestJet tariff effective 21 January 2026)
It’s almost always cheaper to add the right bag when you book or online before you fly.
Other WestJet cabin rules worth knowing
- On WestJet Encore turboprop flights you may be asked to check your cabin bag even if it fits the sizer, so keep medicines, laptops and keys in your under-seat bag.
- On flights within Canada, if your cabin bag is within the size limits but there is no room on board, the checked bag fee and service fee do not apply.
- A pet kennel counts as your under-seat bag.
- Duty-free shopping and food you bring on board must fit inside your cabin bag and under-seat bag allowance.
- These do not count towards your allowance: a nappy bag for an infant, a car seat for a seat you have bought, personal medical devices, mobility aids, and coats, hats and umbrellas.
- If part of your trip is on a WestJet airline partner, the other airline's baggage rules may apply.

What size is WestJet’s free personal item?
41 × 15 × 33 cm on the UltraBasic fare. It must fit under the seat in front of you.
What size carry-on bag can I take on WestJet?
Up to 56 × 23 × 36 cm. It’s included with Econo and EconoFlex, Premium and PremiumFlex and Business and BusinessFlex.
What happens if my bag is too big for WestJet?
A bag that does not fit the sizing device or exceeds the allowance is treated as a checked bag. You pay the checked bag fee plus a service fee. Service fee of CAD $25 per bag on flights within Canada, on top of the checked bag fee (WestJet tariff effective 21 January 2026)
What are the WestJet carry-on bag dimensions in inches?
Free personal item (41x15x33 cm): 16.1 × 5.9 × 13 in. Carry-on bag (56x23x36 cm): 22 × 9.1 × 14.2 in.
How many litres is the WestJet carry-on bag allowance?
At most 20.3 litres for the free personal item (41x15x33 cm) and at most 46.4 litres for the carry-on bag (56x23x36 cm). That is the volume of a square-cornered box with exactly those measurements. A real bag has rounded corners, so check the size on the label as well as the litres.
Can I use a backpack as my free personal item on WestJet?
Usually yes. The limit is on size, not on the type of bag, so a backpack that measures 41 × 15 × 33 cm or less when packed fits the free allowance. Straps and pockets count towards the size.
What are the liquids rules for WestJet hand luggage?
WestJet doesn’t set the liquids limit. The airport you fly from does: some airports still enforce 100 ml, while others now allow containers up to 2 litres. Check your departure airport on our liquids rules page.
