If your bag is too big at the gate
If you reach the gate over your allowance, you pay the excess carry-on fee and the bag goes in the hold. On selected routes you can buy +7kg Extra Carry-On Baggage at the gate instead, if it is still available. Any item over 10 kg, any bag over the size limit, or more than two items must be checked and the fee paid.
Excess carry-on fee at the gate: AUD $125 domestic, AUD $175 international. +7kg at the gate: AUD $85 domestic, AUD $110 international.

Other Jetstar cabin rules worth knowing
- From 2 February 2027, Jetstar Airways (JQ) flights change to size limits with no 7 kg or 14 kg weight limit. This record shows the rules for earlier flights and for Jetstar Japan (GK).
- From 2 February 2027, Economy includes an under-seat bag up to 40 × 30 × 20 cm. An overhead bag up to 56 × 36 × 23 cm needs Priority Carry-on or a bundle that includes it. Business Class includes both. No single bag can weigh over 10 kg.
- Bookings made before 5 August 2026 for flights from 2 February 2027 get Priority Carry-on at no extra cost, except group bookings.
- Jetstar monitors carry-on at the airport. Fees are higher at the gate than if you add baggage online.
- +7kg Extra Carry-On Baggage is sold on selected routes only, with limited availability. It is not available between Australia and New Zealand.
- A garment bag up to 114 × 60 × 11 cm can replace your main item if it folds neatly and fits in the overhead locker.

How many litres is the Jetstar cabin bag allowance?
At most 46.4 litres for the cabin bag (56x36x23 cm). That is the volume of a square-cornered box with exactly those measurements. A real bag has rounded corners, so check the size on the label as well as the litres.
