If your bag is too big at the gate
If the overhead bins are full, JetBlue may ask you to check your cabin bag at the gate at no extra charge. Bags must still meet the size limits, and JetBlue says other fees apply for oversized bags.
It’s almost always cheaper to add the right bag when you book or online before you fly.
Other JetBlue cabin rules worth knowing
- Every fare allows one cabin bag and one under-seat bag. The cabin bag can go in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.
- If your trip includes an American Airlines flight, the first airline on your first flight each way sets the bag rules.
- A pet carrier counts as your under-seat bag, and you can still bring a cabin bag.
- These do not count towards your allowance: assistive devices, a reasonable amount of duty-free shopping, one nappy bag for a lap infant, and items such as a coat, umbrella or infant car seat.
- Tickets bought on or before 29 July 2026 use older fare names, such as Blue Basic, which has included a cabin bag since 6 September 2024.

The airline doesn’t set the liquids limit. The departure airport’s security does. Some now allow up to 2 litres.
Liquids rules by airportJetBlue cabin bag questions
What size is JetBlue’s free personal item?
43 × 33 × 20 cm on the Main Base fare. It must fit under the seat in front of you.
What size carry-on bag can I take on JetBlue?
Up to 56 × 36 × 23 cm. It’s included with Main Base, Main and Main Flex, EvenMore, BlueFirst and Mint.
Do JetBlue’s size limits include wheels and handles?
Yes. The limits are for the whole bag, including wheels, handles and side pockets.
What happens if my bag is too big for JetBlue?
If the overhead bins are full, JetBlue may ask you to check your cabin bag at the gate at no extra charge. Bags must still meet the size limits, and JetBlue says other fees apply for oversized bags.
What are the JetBlue carry-on bag dimensions in inches?
Free personal item (43x33x20 cm): 16.9 × 13 × 7.9 in. Carry-on bag (56x36x23 cm): 22 × 14.2 × 9.1 in.
How many litres is the JetBlue carry-on bag allowance?
At most 28.4 litres for the free personal item (43x33x20 cm) and at most 46.4 litres for the carry-on bag (56x36x23 cm). That is the volume of a square-cornered box with exactly those measurements. A real bag has rounded corners, so check the size on the label as well as the litres.
Can I use a backpack as my free personal item on JetBlue?
Usually yes. The limit is on size, not on the type of bag, so a backpack that measures 43 × 33 × 20 cm or less when packed fits the free allowance. Straps and pockets count towards the size.
What are the liquids rules for JetBlue hand luggage?
JetBlue doesn’t set the liquids limit. The airport you fly from does: some airports still enforce 100 ml, while others now allow containers up to 2 litres. Check your departure airport on our liquids rules page.
