If your bag is too big at the gate
Cabin bags over the weight or size limit should be checked in at the airport check-in counters. If they are not, AirAsia may check them at the boarding gate and a gate baggage fee may apply.
It’s almost always cheaper to add the right bag when you book or online before you fly.
Other AirAsia cabin rules worth knowing
- Xtra Carry-On raises the limit to two bags and 14 kg in total. One bag can weigh up to 10 kg (7 + 7, 9 + 5 and 10 + 4 kg are allowed, 11 + 3 kg is not).
- Pre-book Xtra Carry-On on the AirAsia MOVE app or website up to 2 hours before departure. It is not sold at airport counters from 13 April 2026, and it is not offered on Indonesia AirAsia (QZ) domestic flights.
- At airport counters you can only buy up to 3 kg of extra cabin baggage, up to 10 kg in total.
- Anything you buy at the airport counts towards your allowance, except duty-free in a sealed tamper-evident bag with proof of purchase.
- The under-seat bag must fit under the seat in front, except for guests in the first row or emergency exit seats (AirAsia advisory, 8 August 2024).
- Infants under 2 have no cabin allowance. Children aged 2 and over get the same as adults.

Liquids rules by airportAirAsia cabin bag questions
What size is AirAsia’s free under-seat bag (personal item)?
40 × 30 × 10 cm on the Low Fare fare. It must fit under the seat in front of you.
What size cabin bag can I take on AirAsia?
Up to 56 × 36 × 23 cm and 7 kg. It’s included with Low Fare, Value Pack, Premium Flex and Premium Flatbed.
Do AirAsia’s size limits include wheels and handles?
Yes. The limits are for the whole bag, including wheels, handles and side pockets.
What is the AirAsia hand luggage weight limit?
The cabin bag can weigh up to 7 kg. AirAsia’s published rules give no weight limit for the free under-seat bag.
What happens if my bag is too big for AirAsia?
Cabin bags over the weight or size limit should be checked in at the airport check-in counters. If they are not, AirAsia may check them at the boarding gate and a gate baggage fee may apply.
What are the AirAsia cabin bag dimensions in inches?
Free under-seat bag (40x30x10 cm): 15.7 × 11.8 × 3.9 in. Cabin bag (56x36x23 cm): 22 × 14.2 × 9.1 in.
How many litres is the AirAsia cabin bag allowance?
At most 12 litres for the free under-seat bag (40x30x10 cm) and at most 46.4 litres for the cabin bag (56x36x23 cm). That is the volume of a square-cornered box with exactly those measurements. A real bag has rounded corners, so check the size on the label as well as the litres.
Can I use a backpack as my free under-seat bag on AirAsia?
Usually yes. The limit is on size, not on the type of bag, so a backpack that measures 40 × 30 × 10 cm or less when packed fits the free allowance. Straps and pockets count towards the size.
What are the liquids rules for AirAsia hand luggage?
AirAsia doesn’t set the liquids limit. The airport you fly from does: some airports still enforce 100 ml, while others now allow containers up to 2 litres. Check your departure airport on our liquids rules page.
